Sidney Poitier, the actor and enduring inspiration who transformed how Black people were portrayed on screen, became the first Black actor to win an Academy Award for best lead performance and the first to be a top box-office draw, has died. He was 94.http://apne.ws/QQ1178V

Few movie stars, Black or white, had such an influence both on and off the screen. Before Poitier, the son of Bahamian tomato farmers, no Black actor had a sustained career as a lead performer or could get a film produced based on their own star power.http://apne.ws/YYDHCZH

Poitier was the escaped Black convict who befriends a racist white prisoner (Tony Curtis) in “The Defiant Ones.” He was also the courtly office worker who falls in love with a blind white girl in “A Patch of Blue.”http://apne.ws/1Hu9V7h

Poitier's many honors included a special Academy Award in 2002, when Black performers won both best acting awards. “I’ll always be following in your footsteps," said one of the winners, Denzel Washington. "There’s nothing I would rather do, sir."http://apne.ws/aQQkOBf

Legend. “In the Heat of the Night” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” were cutting edge studies on the state of race relations in America. Such Brave work. Such a talent. #sidneypoitier #ripsidneypoitier 😢

Sidney Poitier is one of the first serious Black actors that ever impressed me, and he was an excellent actor, as well. He will always be remembered for the many movies that he acted in them, all of them serious roles. I loved his acting, and yes, he did pave the way for others!

Mr Poitier was wholly believable in everyone I ever saw him portray Articulate, clear-minded, a handsome leading-man, highly professional. . His only failing role: playing a white man's Black man in real life, hence his fierce privacy . Had he started in t 90s, he'd hv bn Denzel.

I can remember the first time I seen him in a move when I was a little kid. It was the move In the Heat of the Night. What a good lesson to learn at a young age. Condolences to his family and friends.

who all can remember his role from the Bruce Willis movie ' The Jackal'. That role of FBI deputy director would be memorable for me

Sent a prayer to heaven for Sidney Poitier. Jesus replied with “Guess who’s coming to dinner” tonight? RIP, Sir, with love.
