The 76-year-old Nobel Peace laureate is popular at home. But she has been heavily criticized abroad for ignoring and, at times, defending rights violations, most notably a 2017 crackdown on Rohingya Muslims that rights groups have labeled genocide.http://apne.ws/GIHtjQT

This just makes Aung San Suu Kyi playing apology for the Rohingya ethnic cleansing all the more tragic, a dark stain on her legacy. She probably believed such complicity would gain some trust from the military and encourage democratic reform. She was wrong.
