Mr. Plessy deliberately broke the 1890 Louisiana Separate Car Act. His case went to SCOTUS, which ruled against him 8-1. Plessy returned to district criminal court, where he was found guilty, paid his $25 fine, and lived a quiet life. To pardon him now is to erase his courage.
