Is this a matter of the number of people who "give up" looking for work no longer existing for the purpose of the statistics?

No it’s just a sign of less people that qualify for unemployment benefits. When a jobless person’s benefits run out that doesn’t mean they got a job.
-
But it does mean that they’re no longer counted as unemployed. People whose unemployment runs out and are still unemployed aren’t counted as such.

When people get kicked off of something the numbers are going to drop.
-
They fall falsely though. Unemployment = people on unemployment. When it runs out—working or not—you’re no longer considered unemployed. So numbers obviously fall as that happens. In America, you’re only unemployed if you get benefits.
