My grandfather had a big lease in the Sierras near Yosemite. He did spring burns to remove underbrush - the USFS hated him. But when a forest fire came, it split and went around his lease.

So, in other words they are doing controlled burns. Something that the Forrest Service has been doing for at least a century. As long as they are using modern fire science techniques, it is great to have their additional labor.
