Isn't it somebody's job to make sure that doesn't happen? I feel we spend a lot of money, surely some of it pays to make sure that doesn't happen? Or like, maybe we shouldn't want to keep people in jail as punishment cause it must be a shitty condition for the guards there too?

That's Z at the end, like the alphabet! I'm glad you asked: I'd like to make a self-sufficient micro-community, where inmates live in a simulated town, perform the necessary work, receive commensurate pay, and can pursue education to ensure they can find work after leaving "jail"

Am I supposed to care about criminal?

Most of these people haven't even been in front of a judge yet..pre-trial incarceration. They haven't been convicted but are too poor to get bail.

90% of them haven’t been convicted of a crime, and even if they have been that’s not an excuse for cruel and unusual punishment. Jails and prisons are responsible for the well-being of people in their custody.
