A Chicago grandfather was charged with murdering a man he gave a ride to on a night of protests over police brutality. Prosecutors said a secret algorithm, tied to a network of surveillance microphones, was key evidence to lock him up. @pulitzercenterhttp://apne.ws/dcOzfUY

Mounted on lampposts and buildings in over 110 communities, ShotSpotter’s sensors alert police to gunshot sounds. The company says that helps lower violent crime. But defense attorneys warn the system can put the wrong people behind bars. http://apne.ws/ioVzln0 pic.twitter.com/2D4OdVnjEK

“I kept trying to figure out, how can they get away with using the technology like that against me?” said Michael Williams, speaking publicly for the first time about his ordeal. “That’s not fair.” http://apne.ws/stsXPPF pic.twitter.com/lTBMes9H4j

Prosecutors' theory was that Williams fired from inside his car, though ShotSpotter says they told prosecutors their sensors don’t reliably pick up gunshots inside cars and buildings. Williams ended up being held for 11 months. And now he lives in fear.http://apne.ws/bbrB7Kx

Firecracker? Gunshot? ShotSpotter says its technology is 100% reliable. First, sensors detect sounds, then an algorithm filters out most bangs. Finally, staff review and often change the computer’s findings. Experts warn that could introduce human bias. http://apne.ws/ynb9lIk pic.twitter.com/fsIVWFNAVt

CEO Ralph Clark says having humans double check their technology is essential. And ShotSpotter evidence is increasingly being introduced in court cases around the U.S.; 91 cases since 2018. http://apne.ws/Z64L1rQ pic.twitter.com/j91kA37RIx

Defense attorneys say ShotSpotter’s reports aren't scientifically solid and that accused people miss their constitutional right to confront all witnesses and evidence because ShotSpotter won’t reveal its algorithm. The company says it's a trade secret.http://apne.ws/lAhqPc0
