Nightly prime-time viewership for the Tokyo Olympics averaged 15.6 million people, combining NBC, cable networks and streaming. The Nielsen company says that's a 42% drop from the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016.http://apne.ws/BdIm8V2

Record streaming is why. Sports are doing just fine. Traditional tv viewing is going bye bye.

That’s because we already knew the results before it was on tv. Rio was live.

Maybe because they made it almost impossible to watch. And heaven forbid you missed an event in their block coverage, then you could only get “highlights”. Eventually.

I know people have tons of cultural takes on why but I love the olympics and always have issues getting into games held with extreme time differences #Tokyo2020

Tough with the time difference for you in the US but once in a decade or so it’s perfect for us in Australia. Beijing and Tokyo were in our daytime and then prime time viewing unlike London and Rio and that makes a high impact on your appreciation of the event.

Probably because many times the events aren't held during the US prime time. But prime time in East Asia.

I think they spread it out too much over multiple channels. I was flipping through 6 or 7 channels at a time. And that's not even counting the Peacock app.
