What about remaining pets? Can’t they let whoever wants to risk it go in and save them?

This entire situation is sad and heartbreaking!!! Unfortunately, looking at that damage, there's no way they'll ever be able to get through all of that rubble to recover everyone. It's impossible! It looks like ground zero down there. I pray for the families.

If they managed to clear the WTC site they’ll be able to do this

As a veteran firefighter the primary concern is the search operation but due to the very real possibility of the remainder of the structure collapsing on rescue workers the safe approach to prevent further loss of life is too drop the rest of the structure then resume efforts.
-
They've also got a hurricane bearing down on them, which I'm sure bad to factor into their decision

Throwing in the towel is not closure. This entire "rescue" effort has been a blotched disaster.

This is really the only safe option. Highly unlikely they find any more survivors, so the workers' safety should be top priority. Knock it down safely, bring in the heavy machinery to recover and give families closure.

We have a hurricane coming. It would be horrible if there were additional losses of life b/c they didn’t. I wonder if they can get the pets that were left behind in the standing towers.
