He was really lucky he took ill with Great emergency medical help nearby. Highlights need for more folks to be trained in CPR and AED machines to be more available

Almost the exact same thing happened to a friend of mine outside a gym 15 years ago. Got out of his car and dropped dead on the pavement. Thankfully a police car was in the parking lot and was equipped w/an AED. He survived, was fitted with a pacemaker and is still doing well.

Ooh as a former soccer player with a pacemaker, I certainly wouldn't want to take a ball to the upper chest for fear of breaking that little plastic thing just under the skin

Maybe he can wear a lightweight chest guard?

Wow great news. I wish him the very best. Sadly, I'm guessing that's the end of his career. Are there any high level athletes who were able to safely perform with a pacemaker (esp a cardio intensive sport like soccer)?
-
A pacemaker isn't really restrictive re: what you can do (I have one). I would worry more about breaking it with a hard strike from a ball or an elbow. It's made from plastic and sits just under the skin. Same reason I no longer play or do martial arts.
