It would be nice if we could finally have some diplomacy in this relationship.

It's not up to the president to decide such matter. If the supreme leader desires it, a meeting will happen. And since, any Iranian (even me, a nobody) who met with a US president gains tons of approval in Iranians' mind can challenge the Supreme leader, he won't let it happen.
