Following some high-profile deaths, several states are looking to require more training for police in dealing with someone in a mental crisis. But none of the laws appear to address whether police should be the ones responding when someone is mentally ill.http://apne.ws/CIHeKWC

How about mental health training for regular citizens too?

First the PD's have to stop moving corrupt cops around like Catholic priests, and hiding their disciplinary records and psych evals.

Police are the worst possible people to be responding to mental health crisis. They almost always make it worse and kill people instead of helping them.

Less training, more involuntary conservation for the helpless.

Why not start hiring trained crisis counselors to accompany police on calls when mental health is suspected. They would also be trained in police procedures. Smaller departments could share them. They should be used in any domestic call.

Maybe poloce departments should be reorganized so that either, 1) the officer has a minor in psychology, or 2) teams have one officer and one counselor. Arguable, most call cops respond to involve mental anguish. Most calls are domestic disturbances.
