You cannot have absolute punishments, not without the ability to be absolutely sure someone committed a crime. Removing the death penalty is not being "soft on crime." It's being hard on justice.

It's time all states choose mercy over vengence. We need to mature as a society, and that move would be a step in the right direction.

I'm not sure you could call the death penalty vengeance, if used strictly in a lawful sense. But we both know that isn't the case, don't we. So, somehow, we're still on the same page. The death penalty should be abolished, but mostly because of America racist use of it.
