THREAD: A 38-year-old marathoner in the northern Italian town of Codogno was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Feb. 20. It was the start of the coronavirus pandemic in Europe. #PandemicAtlashttp://apne.ws/w5H8cHT

The world watched in horror as intensive care units in northern Italy were overwhelmed with patients struggling to breathe. In cities like Bergamo, deaths were rising so fast that the army was called in to transport the coffins. #PandemicAtlas http://apne.ws/we3osNW pic.twitter.com/WZgo6V424b

Italy became the first country to order a nationwide lockdown on March 9. From one day to the next, street life disappeared. An eerie silence replaced the usual bustle of cities like Rome and Milan. #PandemicAtlas http://apne.ws/1Esk3ae pic.twitter.com/WSOK0v8JHu

The lockdown worked. As Italians were cooped up at home for 10 weeks, the infection rate fell. By the summer, most restrictions were lifted, and life slowly started to return to normal. #PandemicAtlas http://apne.ws/g6GzjJR pic.twitter.com/xEBhyUsUBO

Italy won international praise for taming the virus. But despite plans and protocols, it couldn’t stop a second surge in the fall. Another 25,000 people died, and hospitals once again were brought to the breaking point. #PandemicAtlas http://apne.ws/bPigJ9O pic.twitter.com/uUFDHL2QvA

The coronavirus emerged a year ago in Wuhan, China, and swept across the world. It brought joblessness and lockdowns, infirmity and death to all corners of the globe. But each nation has its own story of how it coped. Read @AP's #PandemicAtlas project.http://apne.ws/tSwvQUR

I don't think China is the source of the epidemic. Western countries should do a good job of testing, and now the epidemic situation in China is well controlled. Better than any other country.

...they're not reporting true cases. That's why it seems "cured" from the outside. Do you really think a country of 1.4 billion w/ varying economic levels miraculous faired better? Even using New Zealand as a baseline, China's COVID-19 cases would easily exceed 600K.

Surprisingly (!) China has the world's biggest population yet the smallest number of deaths. Coincidence? Don't think so.

Yeah, my nation's story is... Our leader raised the white flag early on because it was "too hard.". And that heard immunity theories working out really well for us.
