Yes. They need more oversight. Review boards only review complaints and make recommendations to PD but the employment of officers is controlled by unions. If the unions protect officers from these complaints...is the problem with the PDs or the unions ignoring the problem?

There's nothing wrong with civilian oversight, it's part of the democratic process. Civilian political leadership has oversight of our military. Therefore civilian oversight of our police is also right. Remember, our military and police forces are vital elements of our democracy.

It will remain to be seen how this may diversify the departments themselves. Police need to protect the liberty of all Community members. Only then might underrepresented communities feel supported and all children may look up to a job in their police force.

Look, let's put race aside for a second: would you agree that there are some pretty glaring problem with US police? Gipsy cops? Unaccountability and excessive power of their unions? Lack of training? Increasing militarisation? Lack of permanent record for policemen?
