What an incredibly contradictory article and even more asinine headline. Voter registration and turnout among black voters is near the highest % in the country (in the article) and local black elected officials also among the highest % in the country (in the article).

Having a basic form of identification, which is available/accessible throughout even the poorest regions there, is vital to more than just voting: gaining employment, opening a bank account, applying for a loan. I grew up (in a very small town) and spent 22 years there. Be better

Buried in the article: “Black registration and turnout rates are actually reasonably high in Mississippi. In 2016, for example, 81% of Black Mississippians were registered and 69% turned out to vote.” Imagine that: Black people have ID’s! Racist AP article.
