Volunteers are working to ensure the stray and feral cats living on an island off the coast of Brazil have enough food. As an unexpected consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, fishermen realized the animals were hungry.http://apne.ws/TsC3O83

The worst anyone can do for domesticated animals like cats or dogs is to dump them somewhere. Ppl assume cats can fend for themselves; they cannot. Wish Brazil could TNR the whole island, & stop the breeding, but w ppl continuing to dump cats there, there's just no end to it.

I love animals, but I mean if they’re feral, then why not just treat them like wild animals? We don’t go around trying to provide food for every wild animal out there. That’s not how nature works. Feral cats are also not the best for natural habitats. Not sure if that the case.

Read the article. There are no resources on the island. They aren’t naturally there.

Why don’t they just remove and sterilize the cats? Then adopt them out.

.....the cats MUST be spayed/neutered...very inexpensive surgery...cats gotta be rapped....kept 1-2 nights in cages....then eleased back onto the island. If ANYONE in the Rio aea is able to TRY to put together a plan, please send me a message. I'm in NYC/USA.

Glenn -- there was an attempt to spay/neuter the cats, in 2012. But it was impossible to get to all of them, as vegetation is super thick and the feral cats hide in the trees. Also, the volunteers have started talks w/ the Navy to set up a neutering station on another island.
