“Beirut is gone.” Many residents emerging from the aftermath of a massive explosion that obliterated Beirut's port and sent a tide of destruction across the Lebanese capital blame the catastrophe on decades of corruption and neglect.http://apne.ws/LbdOBjF

It was called that, but it was never an accurate comparison. It was always the corrupt heart of an artifical and corrupt state run by old families and fueled by confessional hatred.

Wow this is just crazy but we need more info. How did it start? Was it targeted? If it was entirely an accident then ports need to be evaluated for safety. So sad for the folks having to deal with this on the ground. Stay strong.

Who stores Amonium Nitrate at such proximity to residential area? So sad.

The aluminum nitrate is the predominate component of explosives manufacture. With out the addition of fuel it will not explode. The speed at which the blast wave traveled indicates this material had been mixed with fuel. I think there are other narratives.

The pure stuff is difficult to ignite by itself, but left long enough, or cooked long enough in a fire, the Ammonium Nitrate can decompose and become its own fuel. Grandcamp explosion in Texas City in 1947 is an example of this, and the scenario is incredibly similar.
