If this is connected to Iran, helping crew is a very clever move. Good looking in terms of PR (hard to blame someone who is rescuing victims), forced to negotiate with Iran concerning their fate plus economic damage is done anyway.

Hostages? Don't forget, Iran took Navy ships hostage in 2016. And they threatened US ships in the Strait for Hormuz in 2012. Odds are this was a calculated move to threaten the world's busiest oil shipping lane since Iran doesn't have any other leverage.
