The sub imploded, but that wasn't the cause of the trajedy. An implosion is the effect of it sinking to the bottom. The cause is likely an explosion inside the sub just prior such as a torpedo misfire or a total catastrophic loss of all power. It would of been on battery power.

A sub from the 1980s that was cut open and retro-fitted. Not something I would trust to be under thousands of pounds of pressure. Bless these sailors and their families.
