I think you just described why baseball endures. Humanity has always struggled with war and disease and we succeed and survive, but we are allowed respite once and awhile.

In the age when 45-60 was the adv life span maybe we needed a simple minded sport to get by. I hope we have evolved to a society where school yard games are played in a school yard. Time and money could be better spent to cure the ills of society.
