Is that not a thing in Oklahoma. Presenting native american students with their eagle feathers is part of the graduation ceremony at my husbands school here in California.

Evidently it was for some reason a matter for debate. Why, I don't know.
-
That's really weird. The students here can choose who presents their feathers and my husband is always honored when he gets asked. It's so cool.
-
As is their right. Being one of the many origional People's of America it a little ironic they require clearance from the courts. . But a good move.

We stole your ancentors' land, spread horrific diseases, murdered them, and forcibly converted them to an alien religion, but sure, after mulling it over, we'll ALLOW you to wear your little feathers.

Even more interesting > “Federal law restricts the possession of eagle feathers but allows tribal members to use them for religious or spiritual purposes. Cherokee citizens must receive special tribal approval to legally possess feathers, officials said”
-
This is a federal law to discourage the killing and capture of protected birds (like our eagle) by non Indian people for the sake of money.

Who the hell would have said no to this to begin with? People are turds.

I am a hard core Conservative and still agree with you. Is this really something to pour energy into? Nope.

i agree with the decision, but would not the separation clause of the 1st amendment preclude ANY religious displays at a school event, like graduation?
-
The contrary would be the case. The government cannot infringe on your religious beliefs. If the school mandated religious attire, that would be a different story.
-
not so, there are plenty of adjudicated cases on the subject. Here is a good read on the subject:https://ffrf.org/publications/brochures/item/27181-top-ten-brochure …

They are specifically referring to the schools themselves, not the students.pic.twitter.com/ilzlGKRSo1

you know, in retrospect, you may be right. I had not earlier considered the yarmulkes that some students may wear as a part of their religion. I think this would be in the same area.
