How much profit did they make? There are many reasons to skewer Uber, but the argument that they have money to spare is a stretch considering how hard they fail at business. (But yes: the moral thing to do is shut their doors)
Uber has taken in $12 billion in investment and had revenues of $1.7 billion in Q4 of 2016. Yet their drivers only take home $3.37 an hour. Does that sound right to you? Uber runs at a deliberate loss to monopolize market share. It’s a post-profit model. If you’re a shoe business, you don’t get to pay half price for the leather you need just because you’re not profitable. Living wage is the minimum cost of labor. Anything less is exploitation.

How about I drive for Uber occasionally. This is misleading. Nobody is doing this for $3.50 an hour. There are a tax advantages to use the mileage deduction of $0.54 per mile. But it does not cost $0.54 per mile to operate your vehicle.

If I can only show $3.50 per hour of taxable income, then that is excellent for me. But there's no way I'm working for $3.50 per hour

This is incorrect or bad math. My wife stopped working at her current job to drive Uber and we did the math, she was making about $12.50 and now she earns $13.75. That is much more than $3.71. That is AFTER I calculated her gas and maintenance fees.

Excuse you, I make $20 an hour on an average uber day, and $13 am hour when it’s slow. When it’s good, I can easily clear $50 an hour. Get your facts right.

Also, Uber is based on demand so drivers can remain idle for awhile if nobody is requesting rides. Buried in that $3.37 is a lot of information that you’re hoping people look past.
