This is a GOP talking point used to dismantle public systems, & it’s sad to see a Dem candidate adopt it. Let’s talk about why Republicans are wrong on this. 1. Universal public systems are designed to benefit EVERYBODY! Everyone contributes & everyone enjoys. We don’t ban the rich from public schools, firefighters, or libraries bc they are public goods. 2. Universal systems that benefit everyone are stronger bc everyone’s invested!
3. When you start carving people out & adding asterisks to who can benefit from goods that should be available to all, cracks in the system develop. 4. Many children of the elite want to go to private, Ivyesque schools anyway, which aren’t covered by tuition-free public college!
5. Lastly, and I can’t believe we have to remind people of this, but it’s GOOD to have classrooms (from pre-k through college!) to be socioeconomically integrated. Having students from different incomes & backgrounds in the same classroom is good for society & economic mobility.
Or clean water?
Not everyone benefits from free colleges and universities. People who don't go to college don't benefit, but instead they pay taxes so that others can, even if they're wealthy.
People who get sick benefit from access to doctors, whether the patient is educated or not. People who travel benefit from engineers designing roads and railways and bridges. People who live in houses benefit from many types of educated persons.
Name 1 government run anything that is better than the private option. Just 1?

Phenomenal thread. Most of the arguments that “rich people get good things too since universal systems are bad” seem incredibly bad faith. The alternative is that the people espousing them really are that dumb, which seems less likely
But we do have both universal and means-tested programs. I doubt AOC wants to make WIC, TANF and Section 8 "universal". So debate which category free college should fall under, but it's a cheap shot to use "Republican talking points" against someone who doesn't pick her category
