Reminder:
- Slavery
Jim Crow + Redlining
War on Drugs
Mass Incarceration
- Black Americans & PoC are far more likely to be convicted + sentenced longer than White Americans for similar crimes.
- Our system routinely criminalizes poverty + exonerates wealth

Many rebut the voting question by saying, “Well, *those* people shouldn’t be jailed.” Glad you feel that way! But the truth is, the US incarcerates more people per capita than anywhere in the world - even more than China. Our system is built to disenfranchise people of color

Exactly. Thank you.

Would be cool instead of trying to dehumanize people in prison we enabled them to have the kind of agency that allows for reform instead of recidivism. Voting rights would be a good way to really start reforming the whole system.

Nonviolent with a dime isn't a felony.

The point here is that if you’re in jail/prison you’re not allowed to vote. The felony factor comes into play after people are released. AND I wouldn’t be confident that it isn’t. Many states still have some pretty stringent drug laws.

I still have faith that you and your brother will someday come up with something well beyond stupidity. There are many people who take those drugs because its needed like cancer patients/Chronic pain, like those who served in the military which I’m sure you didn’t.

“Why do we have more total prisoners than Stalinist Russia did” is probably a question we should ask more often tbh
-
They had a smaller population but incarcerated more people...
