Reminder:
- Slavery
Jim Crow + Redlining
War on Drugs
Mass Incarceration
- Black Americans & PoC are far more likely to be convicted + sentenced longer than White Americans for similar crimes.
- Our system routinely criminalizes poverty + exonerates wealth

Many rebut the voting question by saying, “Well, *those* people shouldn’t be jailed.” Glad you feel that way! But the truth is, the US incarcerates more people per capita than anywhere in the world - even more than China. Our system is built to disenfranchise people of color

Getting caught with a dime bag isn’t a felony though, honey.pic.twitter.com/bE6J48Y1MS

A gram isn’t a felony but add money and a baggie then it’s possession and intent which is a felony. But you’d get probation and community service in that situation while someone like me is looking at 3 years
-
My experience of talking to some black inmates is that they're just doing what they know to make money. It really hurt my feelings for them that they didn't have better role models than a drug dealer. It's taking a turn for whites now also. They want fast money without working.
-
Drug dealers were the ones who had money when the business didn’t want to be in the neighborhoods and the parents had to work 2 jobs 30-45 minutes away just to maintain. Run a quick errand and get 20 bucks.
-
The majority of people don't know this though. I've walked through black neighborhoods in Dayton and little kids sitting on steps stop me and say are you looking. I was blown away. These guys use children so they don't catch a case. This is so wrong, they're babies.
-
I'd just like to say to everyone saying a gram ain't anything in 2019: weed has only been decriminalized on the state level. My fiancee is almost 24 years old and she can't get her driver's license because she got caught walking and smoking a joint at 17. A gram can still

Mess up your life, and a completely legal dispensary can still be raided by the feds. So while it's very true that a poc is set to fail in our broken system, the breakage goes deeper than that. We have a tendency to segregate our issues rather than fight a common enemy together

Except you don’t lose your right to vote unless you’re a CONVICTED FELON. Who screens your tweets? It’s as bad as the fact you literally just sh*t talked a Senator because you didn’t realize it WAS ONE OF YOUR OWN. You may have blocked

Nonviolent with a dime isn't a felony.
-
The point here is that if you’re in jail/prison you’re not allowed to vote. The felony factor comes into play after people are released. AND I wouldn’t be confident that it isn’t. Many states still have some pretty stringent drug laws.
-
How many people are serving long PRISON sentences with misdemeanors? Short sentences w/o priors are likely to remain in county.
-
A lot actually... also many people are forced to take a plea deal and become a felon no matter if they go to federal prison or not..
-
Quick distinction - federal prison is only for federal crimes. The difference between felonies and misdemeanors is that felons are sentenced to prison and those convicted of misdemeanors are sentenced to jail.
-
No, most convicted of misdemeanors are sentenced to a fine and, possibly, probation. Jail is not the norm on a misdemeanor.
-
I wasn't talking about the norm. I was simply trying to explain that not all felons are sent to federal prison, but feel free to expand on what you've started rather than jumping on what you think I meant. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
-
What’s your concern regarding federal vs. state? Felons in state prison lose voting rights too.
