Just got back from a few (mostly) unplugged days visiting my abuela in PR, and I see the President is tweeting about me.
Just another day at the office!

Like many public systems, GOP want to rip the battery out + say the whole car doesn’t work, so they can sell it for parts. Fully funding the VA & hiring to fill the *49k vacancies* is a clear path to improving it - not auctioning off our vet care systems to for-profit companies.

All due respect, Congresswoman...and I am a fan...but if your VA is great...it is the exception rather than the rule. I am a fully disabled Marine...and I have nothing but horror stories...and I am far from unique in my experience.
-
Not a vet. And I'm ignorant, generally, about vet issues. I have a basic question. If the gov't pays for healthcare for vets (which it should and at levels equal to need), why also have gov't run/funded hospitals/clinics? What's the rationale for that? Sincerely curious.
-
The govt. doesn’t automatically give health benefits. Vets can get anywhere from discounted healthcare...to free (I’m considered 100% disabled...so mine is free)...but there is darkness beneath the story.
-
Gotsa. This clarification helps. I was under the impression all vets not dishonorably discharged received free healthcare w/ benefits varying depending on need, rank, tenure, etc.
-
No..in fact..veterans are discouraged from putting in disability claims. The VA is set up to take advantage of general ignorance of vets, and create an atmosphere of intense frustration..until they give up. It’s cheaper than paying for all the actual disabled out there. Many (1)

True story. You have to have been rated at 40% or greater to even qualify for VA care. Not all Vets qualify for VA care. Some of us don't even want to. See this latest poll:https://twitter.com/VOCRadioRobDoc/status/1121521114658889728 …
-
Any vet can have healthcare through the VA...those under a certain disability % have to pay. Costs vary depending on income.
-
It is insane that happens to those disabled. Been reading about it after this helpful thread and this shit is seriously bullshit. I mean, the disabled should be from a moral & business sense at the front of the line. It’s just not right there are all these hurdles.

VA’s are crap. If there isn’t a close one, patients drive a long way for medications and appts. Deny care, hassle to admit pt’s from the ED, have to clear it with VA most times. Congress should have the same health benefits as the veterans. Then let us know how great it is.
-
I am an Iraq Veteran and I have been treated at 3 different VA facilites, east coast and west coast, I still get all my treatment as a disabled veteran at the VA, staff & wait times have been very good , VA need funding for facilities maintenance & improvements
-
They do need more funding. I’m glad you’ve had a good experience. Thank you for your service.

The VA system needs to sample test all locations & speak with Veterans. Then, find the locations with positive feedback that offer admirable service, and bring the rest up to those standards. It is a process that can work. Veterans earned the best care. And def. no privatization.
-
And there is definitely room for improvement in some places. Many will have different experiences, but certain standards need to be set and met so that we don't have one town offering great care for Vets & the next doesn't. The VA can be great with more attention on short falls.

WOW you’re really digging your heels in on this one. A lot of veterans beg to differ on this issue. The quality of care is very inconsistent and deplorable in some locations. Imagine going in, saying you’re thinking of committing suicide and being told to come back in four months

Hey
#sideshow nitwit, In case you haven't noticed, the government is already running the VA healthcare system and it's not running too well now! Privatizing it would drive competition. That saves#taxpayers money and provides better service to our#Veterans. -
As a vet that uses VA it has been good to me. I say no to privatizing no good often comes with healthcare when it is about the bottom line. Does it need fixing & tweaking sure
-
As a vet myself, I've had some fair treatment at the VA as well, but that's not the norm. the Dallas VA hospital is no where near the operational organization that major medical hospitals are.

I don't believe privatization is the answer, but I don't believe judging the system based on one center is the answer, either. Our navigation of the system for my husband has been a nightmare.
