As a person who actually worked for tips & hourly wages in my life, instead of having to learn about it 2nd-hand, I can tell you that most people want to be paid enough to live. A living wage isn’t a gift, it’s a right. Workers are often paid far less than the value they create.https://twitter.com/axios/status/1100283779703173121 …

In fact, wages are so low today compared to actual worker productivity that they are no longer the reflections of worker value as they used to be. Productivity has grown 6.2x more than pay: https://www.epi.org/productivity-pay-gap/ …pic.twitter.com/J7ctQ8TXPO

Want more money? Work harder, gain more skills, test the job market, etc. Minimum wage jobs aren’t meant to support families. They’re meant for young people to get experience.

When FDR created the national minimum wage he meant for it to be a living wage. To say it 'wasn't meant to support families' is ahistorical: "No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country." -FDR

That was 1938. 81 years ago. The min wage was $0.25. Equivalent to $4.19 in 2015. Should we go back to that?

Annual income in 1938 was 1700 bucks. A house cost 3900. Today the average annual income is 50k and the cost of a house is 300k. We went from 2x the annual income to 6x the annual income. Cost of living has far outscaled average income.

bartending isn't a career. it's a part time job in college that can easily be replaced by someone else. good jobs are out there for people who hustle and make their own breaks. if you are waiting for life to hand you gold you'll end up broke.

You shouldn't need a high powered job to have a comfortable life in our wealthy country. My father was a high school drop out and worked low level blue collar jobs all his life. We had two cars, owned our own house, mom stayed home, had yearly vacations and 3 kid in college

It was in the 50s and 60s. I grad HS '66. He never made more than 35k in his life. Fortunately he saved a lot of money even at that low salary. Parents lived on his retirement and pension for the rest of his life. It was a time when taxes were balanced and unions.

There are ways to earn a good living now but it involves either having higher education and/or having multiple streams of income. That equates to more hours working, less time to vacation (guy said his fam had yearly vaca) and no certainty of retirement money unless you invest.

Also, raising the minimum wage isn't a handout from the *government.* Min wage hasn't risen with inflation & the cost of living, we're just looking for legislation to rectify that (because businesses wont pay more out of the goodness of their hearts, this is capitalism, babeee!)

Capitalism is when you get paid for what your worth not what you decide you deserve. Your worth is determined by what a employer is willing to pay you and still be competitive with the pricing of their goods or services. Employers will pay more if you have skills.

40hrs/week of a human's work DESERVES a living wage. Employers *won't* pay more for your skills if they can hire someone for less—that's how capitalism works (minimize cost, maximize profit—workers be damned). This is why we have unions & minimum wage.
