And I thought people went into public service to serve.

What, so they're supposed to live in a ditch and boil shoes for soup so they can put "intern" on their resume?
-
Interning is a choice. Weigh the pros and cons, make a decision and get to work.
-
For a lot of people, the cons include “I would not be able to afford food or shelter.”
-
Why do so many have issues with people being paid for work??? I’m so confused.

Historically interns were working to gain experience not working to make a living. They were generally people in school. They money congress allotted for them isn’t meant to be a working wage. They do make very important contacts as well as gain great experience.
-
I could have paid to have that kind of experience and contacts. People don't realize how much those things are worth.
-
Too bad grocery stores/landlords/colleges don't accept experience and contacts as a form of payment.

Is that fund annual?? So $5,000 per intern? For the year?!?! WTF
-
internships are usually no more than 3 months and often associated with school curriculum or requirement.
-
I know about the school req's. My (paid) internship was for my last two years of school.
-
That's unusual. Congressional internships are usually for a semester (part time while still attending school) or full-time for 6-10 weeks in the summer.

A Congress person could always give a portion of their pay so an intern can afford housing....that is what Socialism is, right? Where I live most folks make less than a 3rd of that $174,000. They save, spend less, cook at home and own a whole, although small, house.
-
They’re called taxes.

honestly it would be nice if we did away with the "free intern" position. it's bad enough you get out of college and many jobs expect a minimum of 2 years work experience, and in some of those cases you are forced to be an unpaid intern to get your 2 years of experience.
-
-
I wouldn't say you are forced to go to college, but when you choose to go to college, you are forced to pay off enormous amounts of debt if you don't have money. If the return on a good education was better, it wouldn't feel so bad.
