    Reading about the shooting at the Capital Gazette is gutting. I start crying every time not just because the loss of life is tragic but also because it makes me feel like no one understands what journalists do and who we are. So I'm going to try to explain: (1/?)

    This thread shows the important differences in how the shooting and alleged shooter were treated by national media. There’s been a significant evolution in coverage of gun deaths. We’ve had a lot of practice.

    No notoriety: 's front is intensely, intimately focused on the victims of the shooting. Their names. Their faces. Not an image of the perpetrator in sight, and his name is nowhere on home page.

    Reading these obits of slain staffers, it’s clear the newsroom has a core of veterans dedicated to mentoring young reporters. Every newsroom worthy of the name has them; they’re the only reason any of us ever learned a damn thing.

    A second friend murdered in the Annapolis Capital newsroom. John McNamara was a careful, committed and lifelong journalist who first honed his craft as a sports reporter on the University of Maryland Diamondback, where I had the pleasure of working with him.

    I am okay physically, so far, mentally I am a mess. I was inside. I am lucky to be alive. Please pray for my coworkers who were not as lucky as I was. We lost some truly great people today. I am in shock trying to process this horrible situation. Thanks for all the kind thoughts.
