People seem habitually to substitute "gender" for "sex". This is because, in an age where vulgarity is a pervasive and highly honored art, no one dare use a word for sexual distinctions that might be mistaken for when the man puts his wee-wee in the lady's pee-pee.

I dispute this notion that gender is some kind of fancy social construct. Dictionary says it is a synonym for "sex"; good enough for me.

Dictionary-smictionary. How does one mentally distinguish gender from sex? Male != masculine. Female != feminine. It seems the newspeak doesn't allow that.

Is there a problem with saying "masculine" when you mean masculine?

No. But there is a problem when you're trying to refer to the general species of secondary characteristics FORMERLY KNOWN AS gender.

There three sexes: male, female, and intersex. There is only one gender; "point dear, make horse."
