If you're part of a voting bloc, then there's a large chunk of people who think like you do. As a result, when you decide to vote, it's not one vote: it's the vote of everyone who thinks like you do. Nontrivial numbers.
For some reason humans use beliefs about things they cannot affect to coordinate. See religion. Given that this is the case, forming political opinions is critical for maintaining alliances.
