Certain further speculations are rather... disturbing. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It has only been two years since publication:…https://molecularcytogenetics.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13039-016-0224-1#Sec3 …

A large multi-dataset cross-institutional study does find support for the birth cohort effect: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/acel.12347/abstract …pic.twitter.com/HVgnliBXrr

... I cannot help but wonder, now, about the secular downtrend in the female age of puberty in the developed countries as well. To what extent is it associated with telomere lengths? They are known to regulate life cycle durations in other species, in various regards.

Related, but more of ends than beginnings. Wish they had inquired as to both. https://journals.lww.com/epidem/Abstract/2014/01000/Leukocyte_Telomere_Length_and_Age_at_Menopause.23.aspx …

Major depression and high cortisol levels are also associated with unusually short telomeres, which are transmitted cross-generationally and appear to be evident prior to the onset of symptoms. The implications of a birth cohort effect are unsettling.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4419149/ …

Also, I misspoke by omission above. The age of puberty is falling rather rapidly in both sexes:https://www.theguardian.com/society/2012/oct/21/puberty-adolescence-childhood-onset …

Another very interesting juxtaposition, albeit tangential: - estradiol appears to be a positive modulator of telomerase, at least in the liver: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1774098/ … - meanwhile, estradiol levels are strongly suppressed by hormonal contraception:http://www.ajog.org/article/0002-9378(72)90098-1/abstract …
