Why would anyone dissolve themselves? I was watching Altered Carbon the other day and found the whole premise unrealistic. A new sleeve/body would probably cost as much as a house, require mountains of paperwork, visits to a lawyer, etc

The thirst to become silicon insects is disturbing — but not surprising, given that nerds tend to hate their biological bodies.

I hate it in the same way I hate my laptop for its lack of processing power - not at all, but I'm definitely for buying a better one once I can.

Except you *are* your body (see embodied thesis) — the upgrade will change you into something else entirely — why would you want that? Power? But once you upgrade, you will no longer desire power. What is the point of satisfying a desire permanently?

See also Kojeve’s text on Hegel — it is the best read on desire, even for those who hate Hegel.

Desire is the actual true currency that drives capitalism. Once ultimate wireheading can be satisfied *in silico,* it *will* be satisfied (see everything that can be hacked will be thesis), desire ceases to exist and with it capitalism.

I agree that wireheaded silicon insects probably don’t have much moral value - they’ve essentially removed all their preferences, after all.

I agree, but my further thesis (contra Land) is that once desire is permanently satisfied after upgrading, capitalism stops, hence entire machinery stops, hence the only thing that survives are biological bodies.

People don't want to be wire heads. They want the real thing. Replicant supermodel girlfriends are the future.

Capitalism requires 1) scarcity, 2) desire. Both can be hacked/witeheaded *in silico,* so talking about a post-human capitalist borg is absurd.
