As #mentalhealth comes into focus with #COVID19 - we need to explain that #ScienceMatters and no, yoga has never been a cure for PTSD. If we fail on this @CaulfieldTim then #mentalillness becomes the new playground for those who replace evidence with making stuff up.pic.twitter.com/1IAKR2DiCv

It’s horribly disconcerting when people present for mental health treatment and tell me they’ve never received evidence-based treatment for their PTSD, OCD, etc. Instead, they’ve received Past Life Regression Therapy, Reiki, etc. ‘Alternative medicine’ promotes this harm.

Yes. Thank you @jonathanstea - like oregano to boast the immune system. As long as mental illness is open to woo, we are in trouble.

Patients deserve the best care based on the best evidence. This goal includes people with mental health problems. I’ve used the term “woo” in the past and found out it could trigger some people and shut down communication.

I haven’t found that problem with the word @TheSGEM I have found serious and deadly problems with the therapies they suggest.

In my opinion/experience, those who dislike terms such as woo/pseudoscience have been its defenders—attempts at such language control is deflection. Being triggered by scientific critiques and inability to de-personalize from these critiques doesn’t justify expiring the terms.

Sums things up perfectly 😀 Does at least show though that your view is not all-pervasive. With the Sci Am author on this one. 'The term lacks a coherent meaning and leads to unnecessary polarization, mistrust, disrespectfulness, and confusion around science issues.'

That article seems to imply that it’s commonplace to any belief without supporting scientific evidence “pseudoscience.” E.g. religion. I see it used to characterize things that *claim* to be scientific, but are not, or use the words of science inappropriately. E.g. homeopathy.
