The affirmative approach may have dealt the Tavistock its final blow. The de facto inevitability of moving from PB to CSH was a major factor in the conclusion that children were unable to consent. Affirmation ensures that PB are not in reality the ‘breathing space’ claimed.

No one would suggest that children in distress don’t need good care. The difference of opinion is about what kind of care is most appropriate.

The evidence suggests with most children, especially teenage girls, factors such as ASD and internalized homophobia play a role. We hope the children can receive good care as soon as possible from experienced therapists who can help them explore the reasons for their distress.
