anyone who hasn’t been a teenage girl probably doesn’t understand how completely routine and ubiquitous it is for teenage girls to be preyed on, courted or groomed by much, much older men

This makes a lot of sense. If Macron wasn't unpopular now, he wouldn't be doing his job. Question is where he will be in 3 1/2 years...

Did he specify previous presidents of THIS country? Maybe he meant former Manafort client Viktor Yanukovych ?

And Truman learned that during an *actual* war, with an *actual* steel shortage, while there was an *actual* strike. And SCOTUS still benchslapped him.

FWIW, , not even a declaration of “national emergency” would enable Trump to seize the private property needed for his wall without specific authorization from Congress. Truman learned that the hard way in SCOTUS’s Steel Seizure decision (1952)(enjoining the seizure).

I don't make a lot of absolute political predictions, but Terry McAuliffe is really, really not going to be the Dem's 2020 nominee.

The body of real intellectual or cultural attention to the origins, meaning and future implications of the planetary crisis—given its absolute, overwhelming centrality to humanity—is astonishingly slight. Especially if one edits out the derivative, trivial + merely posturing.

"We take it for granted. Historically, though, the phenomenon of the neutral civil service — apolitical government employees, chosen and promoted on merit, working on behalf of the state rather than a person or party — is vanishingly rare"

Trump said the "shutdown forever" thing because he bluffs when he negotiates. What is his tell? How do you know when he is bluffing? When he talks. Pretty sure Nancy Pelosi is wise to this.

Just for shits and giggles someone should start a rumor Pence's chosen method to end the shutdown is the 25th Amendment.

Yes. There are *many* reasons to impeach, and articles have been filed. There are also many reasons to try to remove dangerous employees who are likely subjects of the Mueller probe -- Kushner for lying on his clearance forms, for example. The time is now.

I'm not all that old, but I remember when important debates were held in public. Now they're mostly held internally, and results are conveyed to the people as tweets. We're not doing electoral reform any more. We're buying a pipeline. Free trade with China is on. Now it's off.

I mean, we're engaged in what amounts to a serious national debate about what Canada's relationship with China should be, and the large organizations that are almost completely absent from the debate are the three traditional political parties.
