  2. The city emailed me to let me know this slide has actually been corrected -- fewer ADUs were permitted. Here's the new slide:

  3. Another interesting stat - homes in Austin have been getting bigger. The average sq. footage of a single family home used to be 1,500. Since the 90s, its been 2,220 sq. ft. This mirrors national trends of bigger & bigger homes

  4. You know how folks in Austin say it's really hard to built anything but a single-family home and big apartment complexes? In the past decade 32% of the new homes permitted have been single-family homes. Duplexes? 3%. Small apartment buildings (3-10 units) 2%.

  7. Land Code consultant says Austin holds the "distinct honor" of revising a land development code for longer (at this point, nearly 8 years) than other cities he's worked in across the country.

Climate change is also a housing issue: "People may flock to major urban centers like Dallas and Houston, which the model predicts will absorb the most migrants, and drive up the pace of urbanization." (via )

A lot of interesting insights into the demographics of 's on-air sourcing. This breakdown of reporters by gender and the gender of their sources really stood out, though.

Traffic deaths in Austin are running 150% over the same point 2019. There have been 10 so far this year. 4 at this time in 2019. We're on the same pace as 2015, when a record 102 people died on Austin roads.

New analysis of racial profiling data finds disproportionality of arrests and searches of black and Hispanic drivers is increasing — not decreasing.

  15. An interesting stat from the city's land code rewrite team just now: Less than 2% of new construction in Austin in the past decade has been complexes with 3-10 units, or what is often called 'missing middle' housing. I did a story on this 2 years ago:

  17. 2 clarify: my story from yesterday hasn’t changed. As I wrote, it was still up to APD 2 take council direction & stop tickets & arrests 4 small amounts of pot. Here Manley says no, we’ll continue as is. But again, w/o testing, which city won’t fund, prosecutions aren’t happening.

  18. Despite city council vote yesterday, Austin police officers will continue to cite & arrest people for possessing small amounts of marijuana - but without testing, courts will continue to not prosecute cases. Which is how it’s working now.
