My favorite part of this is when people like Kurt pretend that criticism and accountability of people like Louis CK are attempts to silence them.https://twitter.com/kurtschlichter/status/1079883684776312832?s=21 …

No, fascism is when people who have power gin up fear among other people who also have power against people who don’t have as much power.https://twitter.com/kurtschlichter/status/1079895556145598464?s=21 …

Here’s another classic. What Louis CK is doing is bullying - but no one wants to defend bullying, so they invent the term “word-policing” to disguise a defense of bullying as something more noble. But it’s not. Louis CK is a bully, pure & simple.https://twitter.com/gpingersoll/status/1080140381134692352?s=21 …

My point stands. It’s bullying when people with power punch down at people with less power. I understand that the conservative worldview is premised upon pretending these entrenched power dynamics don’t exist. But that doesn’t change the fact that they do.https://twitter.com/gpingersoll/status/1080144512800960513?s=21 …

The people on this website confidently informing me that entrenched power dynamics do not exist in America have something in common (besides working for the Daily Caller) but I can’t quite put my finger on it...pic.twitter.com/c3I6lVjNCJ

If you paid attention to his career, he mocked the ‘powerful’ quite regularly, but now that his targets aren’t just republicans and Christians, but including the sacred cows of ‘progressive’ points, now he’s too much. Louis CK is the consistent one with his comedy.
-
You've uncovered exactly that place where people keep getting it wrong. "Consistency" is not a goal. We are actually asking for people to be cognizant of power dynamics and not act like every joke is the same. But sure, keep pretending you don't understand.
-
Punching up is funny. Punching down is not.
-
Punching down means going after people I agree with and punching up means going after people I disagree with
-
Not even close. Good try though. It has to do with many factors, including race, gender, orientation, economic status and platform.
-
Agreed and that’s why joking about affluent white kids that were given a national platform should be considered punching down
-
Affluent white kids....who survived a mass mirder while watching their loved ones get slaughtered.
-
I always think it's incredible that these people don't care about the slaughter. They literally think being interviewed on TV makes up for any hardship and should be considered privilege. It's wild.

Man one thing about this Louis C.K thing is it really got everyone on their high horse of morales. I had no clue how many perfectly civil without fault people we had in this country no wonder we have a perfect society and have not come close to electing a maniac!
-
I feel like you should keep drinking lol
-
Lol, high horse? "Let he who has not whacked off in front of an unwilling audience cast the first stone."
-
Wait, lemme practice my fast ball a little more first.

Adam Jentleson is a good reminder that if you say something empty and meaningless that sounds vaguely smart and social justicey people on twitter will blindly like it without thinking about it, as long as you come across as being on "their side"
-
Excising the power and structural dynamics from a situation before making their argument is exactly how people like Louis and Kurt Schlichter set up the conditions for their bad faith arguments about how they are “the real victims”
-
Obsessing over the "power and structural dynamics" of every situation is how people who "aren't racist" get to be racist
-
Oh I thought it was “empty and meaningless”? But now this kind of talk has the power to turn people into racists! Got it!
-
Again that sounds snappy but in reality misses the point completely. Your statement can still be devoid of any substance, fact or meaning and still be the kind of talk that racist control freaks use to bring everything back to identity rather than content
-
it’s not either/or - it’s both! the CONTENT of one of louis’ “jokes” was to punch down against trans people. and we live in a world where it is still quite common to be violently attacked for being this identity! but point it out and it’s: “oh, be ‘civil’ you SJW!”
-
You really expect me to believe the most common response to criticism of his routine is "oh be CIVIL you SJW?" You are literally talking complete bollocks, I can't waste any more time on this. That's just such a bizarre and dumb thing to say, I'm speechless.
-
yes that literally is the most common response by right wingers in the USA, and i think it needs to be pushed back against ... what IS your point anyway?
