Oxford charges a fee of £75 for graduate applications. Many of us here feel that this is unjustified, and that it's a barrier to fair access. The resolution below will be debated in Congregation (Oxford's 'parliament') on 10 March at 2 pm: please share this with anyone relevant.

Great opinion piece from in response to the recent survey of research culture - focussing in on teamwork, mental health and openness in science as important ways to improve things.

  4. Odgovor korisniku/ci

I got very annoyed with the survey asking me to decide whether i preferred theories or facts - they need to go together - but now we know MBTi Is a theory that avoids facts, maybe the question makes more sense

  5. The fee levied for application to postgraduate study at Oxford remains an obvious and unjustified barrier preventing fair access. It dilutes the talent and diversity of our research community. Please sign the petition to remove this barrier

"... Or it could mean you're the "sexual" union and I'm the eternal feminine in the precosmogonic egg. Now I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth. The truth is: you're the walled garden, and I am the chaos dragon. But I'm trying, Bucko. I'm trying real hard to be the void."

  9. This fake diversity nonsense (where they replace white characters with people of color) is disgusting. It is not sincere or a solution. NEW STORIES BY PEOPLE OF COLOR ABOUT PEOPLE OF COLOR is the solution. WE get to tell OUR stories! Stop USING us and GET OUT OF THE WAY!

Today in the Journal of We Don't Science, people who long for the golden days when their parents longed for them to take a book to bed despair that their children are taking a device that accesses almost every book ever written to bed

Trinity College Cambridge has put out a statement merely noting that the Clark Lecture scheduled for the 13th is 'cancelled'. In fact, Arundhati Roy withdrew as an act of solidarity with & after being informed that the College was under local & national censure

  13. this is un-fucking-acceptable. How dare you FLY OUR DAMN FLAG and then allow the TERF in chief to spread her hate speech here. You are failing our students and staff by condoning this nonsense.

Though scientists have been taught this lesson many times throughout history, the work we do has (sometimes severe) social and political. A preprint about the coronavirus is being used to facilitate extremely harmful conspiracies:

  18. A lot of students ask me if it’s “worth it” to get a PhD. It’s been almost 4 years since I graduated and the answer is glaringly clear now. No, it wasn’t worth it. At all.

  19. I rarely talk about things I'm doing regarding diversity and inclusion on Twitter b/c it feels like bragging about something I could always be doing more for (and still learning about) — however, a trusted friend mentioned that it could add value, so here's an email I sent today

just a reminder to anyone thinking about backing this, the author of altered carbon is a full throated transphobe who was viciously going after trans women in the aftermath of jk rowling's recent BS - yr transhumanist hero is a transphobic hatemonger, and deserves none of yr $$$$
