In small towns across America, kids are crawling under parked train cars to get to school on time.

The Railway Mail Service had a high accident rate as trains went faster and wooden mail cars were located behind the engine. Between 1890-1905, more than 141 RMS clerks lost their lives.
Here's a wreck in Danville, Virginia, from Sept. 27, 1903.

I had never been to the National Postal Museum in D.C. before until this week. My favorite exhibit—of course—was about the sorting of mail on moving trains, an innovation that began after the Civil War and lasted through 1977 after decades of declining railroad traffic.

Over the next five years, U.S. states will receive $350 billion for highways. States have a chance to try new strategies for addressing congestion, but some are still choosing to widen freeways — an approach many transportation experts say does not work.

Drove three hours to take in the wonderful healing waters at the warm springs in Bath County.
The oldest spa structure in the country, the bath houses closed in 2017 for rehabilitation. It was worth the wait for them to reopen.

Why do rail barons hate paid leave so much? Why would a company have no problem handing out 24% raises and caps on health-care premiums but draw the line on providing a benefit as standard and ubiquitous throughout modern industry as paid sick days?

A derelict rail line is being reimagined as a linear park, like Manhattan’s High Line. But in a borough that lacks both green space and transportation, locals wonder whether its best use would be the original one.

Now that Blue Line is back, riders can get a sneak peak at the new Potomac Yard station in Alexandria. The track is tied in, but still looks like it has a lot of interior work to go.

Sometimes, I text friends a hilarious tweet and say, “I stay on this godforsaken platform for this content.” Some days, Twitter’s algorithm forces incredibly stupid content like this (that he’s digging in his heels to defend) into my feed that pushes me to the edge of leaving.
