A book I read; a man on the run with the secrets of FTL travel. This is because FTL technology, once you figure it out, is easy. Anyone can do it. But that same technology can be used to cause the sun to explode, so any civilisation that invents the technology destroys itself.

Vernor Vinge's RAINBOWS END is partly about him walking back his techno libertarianism upon sitting down and thinking about a world where "Maker" tech means literally anyone who wants one can print an assault rifle, or for that matter a suitcase nuke

And, you know, there's no symmetry here, it's much easier to make a nuke than to make a nuke-proof shelter

I used to think that, while the government has superior weaponry and better trained people, a gun was still better than no gun. Now they have drones with Hellfire missiles and remote control shotguns and more and I think...nope, an AR15 won't help. Tyranny wins.

It’s turns out having a gun wasn’t what prevented tyranny but not voting for tyrants was. Who could have guessed?

Tell that to George Washington. And Adolf Hitler. And Stalin. And Kim Jong Un. And Fidel Castro. And Hugh Chavez. And the countless other tyrants who disarmed their populations to suppress them.

North Koreans have access to military equipment, as almost all of them are part of the active reserve. Assault rifles, artillery pieces, even tanks, all in the average citizens hands.

The majority of those dictators rise to power by votes. I think you probably meant King George the whatever instead of Washington, but that was before democracy was a common form of government so clearly outside the purview of my statement.

And yet, guns are strictly regulated in other places, like Australia and the UK, and their population isn't being suppressed? It's almost like disarming a population and totalitarian rule are two different things. I know that's inconvenient for your argument, but it's factual.
