  3. Through actions involved with opposing the war we realized that we also needed to address a wide range of connected issues within what we now call the tech industry - from racism and sexism through rights of privacy, tenant rights and concerns about surveillance and worker rights - all in the infancy of mainframe computer era.

  4. In 1971, CPP asked what the collection and use of more data would lead to. It recommended actions that seem prescient today:
- The acknowledgement that there are no technical safeguards for data
- Data collection should be limited and sale/interchange between companies and governments should not be allowed
- Technicians have an obligation to inform and protect the public about the harmful effects of misuse of data

  5. In CPP's working groups and through its newsletter, we analyzed the power structure in the computer industry, which we felt was becoming a 'de facto class structure':
"Keypunch operators are overwhelmingly minority group women; computer operators are largely non-college men, many from minority groups; programmers and analysts are mainly college educated middle class whites; and managers are virtually all men".

Computer People for Peace’s initial efforts to unionize computer workers gave rise to ongoing discussions about ‘what is good work’, and if good work with computers could be created by worker collectives and small organizations within the industry.

The concerns that CPP protested within the tech industry in the 1960s are still alive today: ✅ Racism & sexism within the tech industry, ✅ Building safeguards around data collection, ✅ Giving workers a say in how their technology is deployed.

One of CPP’s early actions was to bring attention to Honeywell’s war production work at ACM’s Joint Computer Conference. While organizers were escorted out that year, their action forced future conferences to include panels on the social implications of tech work.
