The Biden-Harris administration must act quickly to determine just how to accomplish its many #climatechange policy goals. Below are seven steps they might take to reorient and begin to implement strong and effective climate policy: (1/x)https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/steps-biden-harris-climate-policy/ …

      1. Appoint diverse leadership at all levels who are committed to fighting the climate crisis. People ARE policy. Appointing diverse leaders -from cabinet-level to the most junior appointee - who understand the ambition needed to achieve deep decarbonization is critical. (2/x)

      2. Build a management structure to ensure all agencies are moving in the same direction. By creating a Climate cabinet they can centralize policy-making with clear decision making and implementation. (3/x)

      3. Build consensus with state leadership to move toward finding climate solutions. The White House should convene state and local leaders to commit to climate goals - setting everyone up for success. (4/x)

      4. Rejoin the Paris Agreement, with a vengeance. Not only should the Biden-Harris administration rejoin Paris, but it's domestic policy must prove its bona fides, and it should drastically increase its ambition at #COP26. (5/x)

      5. Invest massively in research, development, demonstration, and deployment. Electricity is just the start. Transporation, industry, agriculture, and buildings must be decarbonized. And Carbon must be removed from the air. (6/x)

(cont) to do this, they should massively increase R&D budgets and also scale up deployment activities for maturing clean energy technology. (7/x)

          6. Rethink how the US builds things. To achieve deep decarbonization a massive amount of incremental infrastructure will need to be built in the next 30 years. We need to untangle the siting and permitting knot once and for all - while protecting the environment (8/x)

          7. Rebuild alliances around the world. The US emits 15% of global emissions but must lead if the world will decarbonize. Building strong policy at home proves good intentions with international partners. (/end)
