    One yr ago today, the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd brought the Floyd family accountability. That’s good. As a prosecutor, I will continue to uphold the principle that no one is above the law, and no one is beneath it. But we must do more.

    Mallinckrodt’s docs are only the first big slice of opioid co. docs to be published. More will be soon by the Opioid Industry Document Archive, where the bright light of day will shine on them for decades. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

    This is why I’ve fought with other AGs for transparency. As we say, “An essential part of justice is exposing the truth. We rejected the companies’ attempts to keep the evidence sealed, or to hand it back to the perpetrators. Instead we posted it online.”

    What do they show? “’Everybody thinks of Purdue when they think about the opioid epidemic, but Mallinckrodt was far worse,’ said Jim Geldhof, a DEA supervisor who investigated Mallinckrodt. ‘They were up to their eyeballs in oxycodone and they knew exactly what they were doing.’”

    In every settlement with opioid cos., I’ve insisted on disclosure of co. documents: we need to know what these companies did to us & how so no one can never do it again. Now 1.4M records from the biggest manufacturer Mallinckrodt have been released.

    Now they’re also trying to limit the ability of my office to hold corporate offenders accountable for deceiving and defrauding Minnesotans, like I’m doing in my lawsuit against Exxon. The leader of this fight is someone who’s taken $ from those defendants. This is wrong.

    3x in 3 yrs, I’ve asked the Senate St Govt Cmte for more $ to help county attys hold violent offenders accountable and get victims in Greater MN the justice they deserve. Each time they’ve ignored me. This year they’ve gone farther than that.

    Turning this settlement into a bill and ultimately into law guarantees that we are maximizing resources to fight the epidemic through treatment, remediation, and prevention. It means people suffering with addiction can get the help they need. This bill will save lives.

    We must never forget that more than 5,000 Minnesotans have lost their lives to the opioid crisis: these are losses we can never restore, and deaths have only accelerated during the pandemic. I have been laser-focused on holding opioid companies accountable for their wreckage.

    No amount of $ can ever make up for the death & destruction the opioid companies caused,’ but overwhelming bipartisan support for the passage of the Opioids bill will allow $300M to begin to flow to MN communities for treatment, remediation, and prevention

    3x in 3 yrs I’ve asked for $ to rebuild AGO Crim Div so we can help county prosecutors—esp in Greater MN—hold violent offenders accountable & bring victims justice. House has acted; Senate no. County attys want help & joined me to ask for it.

    TurboTax bid on paid search ads to deceptively direct consumers who were looking for free tax prep to its for-pay service. At times they deliberately made their free filing product inaccessible from search engines when consumers searched for free tax prep.

    Here’s some stuff TurboTax & owner Intuit did: they deceptively branded & titled their for-pay service as free & repeatedly used the word “free” in their ads, while the program they offered under their agreement with the IRS to provide free filing did not indicate it was free.

    I got $1.8M back for low-income Minnesotans who TurboTax deceived into believing they were getting free tax prep when they weren't. TurboTax had an agreement with the IRS to offer free tax prep but lured folks into products they had to pay for. No way.

    My office has protected ppl from fraud & abuse in student lending: we got $40M back for former MSB/Globe students, $14M for Navient borrowers, $2.6M for former ITT Tech students, $2.1M for former Argosy students, & more. But Minnesotans need federal help.

    Today I joined 7 AGs in respectfully calling on Pres. Biden to cancel federal student debt. It’s a crushing $1.7 TRILLION that could go straight into our economy but instead is harming families and aggravating unfairness & inequity. Let’s do it and give all of us a lift.
