Sydney Anglicans to ban same-sex marriage, yoga and burning ceremonies on all church property - including a large number of commercial premises leased by the church - our story for @abcnews @ABCthedrum https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-19/sydney-anglicans-banning-ssm-yoga-on-all-church-property/10397748 …
Yet, strangely we do not condemn the male genital mutilation in central Australia (No, I don't mean circumcision).

-
Well... some do! And it's trickier in that sense because they were here first.
-
But the Anglicans were here before the yoga teachers
-
Yeah but the point I make is that: if the Aboriginal elders allow for the Protestant church to be on *their* land then isn't it a bit rich for the Prptestants to be intolerant to others?
-
I think 'allow' might be a bit strong. Historically it wasn't a request. But then, I also know a number of Aboriginal Anglican ministers. Talks with them about what is religion and what is culture are wonderfully fascinating
-
Well, the fact that it wasn't a request just makes it worse! I applaud your attitude though as I think any church that wants to survive into the next century needs to practise more tolerance, not less.
-
Certainly, more tolerance is called for. Not just by society, but also by the very scripture the Anglicans hold to. But, tolerance does not mean pretending your differences don't exist. I won't be having a BBQ at the local Hindu temple, that's not them discriminating illegally
-
Well, look, in light of your arguments I can see the only comparable practise to that being the allowance of yoga (though I'd argue that yoga has gone beyond Hinduism and is now just a common practise borrowed from that culture 1/2
-
Smoke ceremonies are different because all Australian land belonged with the Aboriginal peoples first. And gay marriage is different because its now equal to any kind of legal marriage and should be treated as such 2/2
