Fun fact--there is very little evidence that cough syrup is effective at treating coughs. In one review, of the 19 studies analyzed, 15 either showed no benefit, or the results were conflicting. Other reviews had similar findings.

HER2 is a growth receptors and breast tumors in roughly one in five patients have an abnormal amount too much of it on the surface of their cells. Trastuzumab blocks HER2 and works really well to improve the survival of the minority of patients whose tumors have abnormal HER2.

For let's talk breast cancer treatments. Trastuzumab is a targeted therapy. It makes a beeline for a tumor meaning less healthy cells are killed resulting in fewer side effects. Trastuzumab binds to a molecule on the surface of some breast cancers called HER2.

When people describe wine notes of tasting like black pepper, or vanilla--there's not actually black pepper in the wine. The wine simply shares some of the same molecules with whatever they’re smelling.

Wet dog smell is from microorganisms living in dog fur. These organisms excrete stinky, volatile compounds. When your dog gets wet, the water displaces & liberates these organic volatile molecules from the surface of the dogs fur, so they can find their way right into your nose.

If scientists suspect an athlete is injecting synthetic testosterone, they can compare the carbon levels of this steroid with a natural molecule present in the athlete's body, like cholesterol. If the carbon ratios don’t match, the testosterone is artificial.
