Even as we all focus on the grand jury’s indictment, we have to remember that it only happened because the community said enough is enough. Real harm could have been prevented if prosecutors had given this case the initial deliberation it deserved.

That’s why we’ve been working with groups who are calling for more accountability, transparency and equity in this case and every case. We must make progress on all of those fronts. You can’t separate this from the disparities across the criminal justice system.
