Just two weeks after the release of a report showing continued disproportionate harm to students of color, the Lincoln Board of Education approved using a half a million dollars to keep cops in schools. We urged the school board to listen to students and parents by ending the program. SRO programs don't make schools safer. They funnel precious resources into a system that too often criminalizes behavioral issues, in LPS disproportionately affecting Black & Native students. (2/6)

School board members used the fact they can end the program with 60 days' notice as rationale to approve it. Now it's on them. They owe it to students and families to explain what conditions will warrant leaving the agreement. (3/6)

Board member Barb Baier is right. At bare minimum - they need to outline clear goals to reduce harm and create a better system of accountability. (4/6)

All this happens as LPS moves forward on a budget that will include fewer teachers and support staff. Kids need teachers and counselors, not cops. We see the disparity across our schools. We know this isn't just a Lincoln problem. Together with partners, we won't stop fighting to put an end to the school-to-prison pipeline. (6/6)https://www.aclunebraska.org/en/press-releases/advocates-urge-end-school-police-programs …
