It's almost equal to the amount Mayor Stothert wants to add to the police budget. It's beyond disingenuous to call it a "$2 million swipe" to their budget.
This is an incredibly modest recommendation that signals to protesters that city leaders are listening. Mayor Stothert and Chief Schmaderer are acting like it's a threat to public safety.
Police aren't mental health experts. They're not addiction specialists.
Our communities need to be safe for everyone. We can get there by reimagining the role of police and shifting resources to community-based and community-led services, especially those that uplift Nebraskans of color, who have been disproportionately targeted and harmed by police.
Divestment will make us safer. This proposal is a very small step in that direction. City leaders can choose to listen or reaffirm a broken status quo.
