The first key mistake was how they responded to the protest. The second was their choice to arrest protesters. During the pandemic, there has been an intentional effort to reduce jail overcrowding in Omaha - citing instead of arresting. It's already in statute. It's common sense.

So why did police choose to arrest and jail 120 protesters? “I don't want to throw OPD under the bus, because they typically do the right thing,” said [the jail's director]. “I don't know what happened Saturday night.”

The rationale in Omaha Police's timeline doesn't hold up. There was no vandalism or violence from protesters. Were officers concerned more traffic cones would get knocked over? Does that warrant a mass arrest?

This is common sense. The response to protests about police brutality should not be more police brutality. Arrests carry lasting - sometimes lifelong - consequences.

We told you earlier this week and it remains true today: our legal team has been working non-stop on this. Omaha can't continue on this path and the people in power must be held accountable. The work continues and as soon as we can share more, we will.
